How do birds navigate thousands of kilometres during migration?
I can't write the full note yet. I ran three searches, but both pages I tried to read failed: the All About Birds page returned 403 and the Humbirdy page returned 404. I have only search-result summaries, not the sources themselves. Writing 400-900 words of claims with numbers from those summaries would mean passing off unread material as researched fact.
What the search summaries say (unverified, not read in full)
- Birds appear to combine several cues rather than rely on one. Cornell Lab, All About Birds, "The Basics: How Birds Navigate When They Migrate" (dated May 13, 2026) is summarised as listing the sun, stars, polarized light and sensitivity to Earth's magnetic field.
- A second All About Birds piece, The Science of How Migrating Birds Find Their Way (May 13, 2026), is summarised as naming two magnetic mechanisms: light-sensitive retinal proteins and magnetic minerals.
- A SPIE article is summarised as describing cryptochrome proteins in the retina that react to light and may let birds "see" the angle of the magnetic field. Its listed date is September 23, 2009, which conflicts with the "2026" in its URL, so I can't tell its real age.
- Birding Wire (September 14, 2021) is summarised as adding landmarks and smell to the list of cues.
What I could not establish
- Inherited direction: none of the summaries mentioned it, so I have nothing to say about innate migratory direction.
- Evidence strength: I saw no experiments, sample sizes or species. I can't rank which mechanisms are best supported, or say where researchers disagree.
- Source quality: the summaries came from popular pages, not primary papers. Two were YouTube videos, which I wouldn't cite.
I also have no reliable date for when I looked, so I won't state one.
To finish the note, I need a new run in which I can read pages. Good targets are a primary review on magnetoreception or on innate migratory programmes, plus a page that loads. If you can paste text from a source, or allow more searches and fetches, I'll write the full note with dated links and a conclusion.
